Is Solar Panel Cleaning Worth It?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no — and anyone who says "always" is selling something. Here's how to tell which camp your system is in, what cleaning costs, and when DIY is genuinely fine.

It Depends on What's on Your Panels

Honest answer: not every system needs professional cleaning every year. But fouled panels — bird droppings, salt film, construction dust — typically lose 15–25% of output, and at that point cleaning usually pays for itself well within the year.

Light dust alone is the weakest case for paying someone: Brisbane's storm season rinses loose dust off reasonably well. What rain doesn't shift is the stuff that actually costs you production — baked-on bird droppings, pollen film, salt residue in bayside suburbs, and the fine bonded grime that builds up near main roads and construction corridors. A dropping concentrated on a single cell can drag down the whole string, which is why bird-affected systems lose far more than "dirty panels" intuition suggests.

The Four Brisbane Soiling Types

Bird Droppings

The worst offender. Opaque, baked on by sun, and concentrated on single cells where string output is dragged down hardest. Rain doesn't remove it. If birds nest under your panels, cleaning without bird proofing just resets the clock.

Salt Air & Sea Spray

Bayside and peninsula suburbs — Wynnum, Manly, Redcliffe, Deception Bay — build a hazy salt film that diffuses light before it reaches the cells. Coastal systems benefit from a clean every 6 months rather than annually.

Pollen, Dust & Grime

Spring pollen, dry-season dust and traffic film bond into a layer that light rain smears rather than removes. Growth corridors with active construction (North Lakes, Springfield, Ripley) accumulate it fastest.

What It Costs and What You Get Back

Professional cleaning is $15 per panel including GST with a $120 minimum — so a typical 20-panel home system is $300, done with deionised water and soft brushes, no detergents, no pressure washers. We photograph the before and after.

Against a 15–25% output loss on a fouled system, that's usually recovered within months on a normal Brisbane power bill — and you get a clean baseline to spot future problems from. If output doesn't lift after a clean, that tells you something useful too: the issue is electrical, not soiling.

When You Can Skip It — and When DIY Is Fine

Skip professional cleaning if: your system is new or was cleaned recently, output tracking looks normal, and the panels show only light dust after rain. Don't pay to clean panels that aren't costing you anything.

DIY is reasonable if: your panels are reachable with a soft brush and hose from the ground or a stable platform — never lean over panels from a ladder, never use a pressure washer (it can crack glass and void coatings), and never clean hot panels in midday sun. If getting to the panels means standing on the roof, the maths changes: a fall costs more than any clean.

Book a professional if: there are bird droppings involved, you're coastal, the roof is two-storey or steep, or output is visibly down. For ongoing bird problems, fix the cause first — stop the pigeons, then clean.

Common Questions

Partially. Rain rinses loose dust but leaves the high-impact soiling — baked-on bird droppings, salt film, pollen and bonded grime. Brisbane systems that "look fine after storms" are often still carrying the droppings that cost the most output.

Once every 12 months suits most Brisbane homes. Coastal suburbs benefit from every 6 months because of salt film, and homes near active construction may need the same. Bird-affected systems should be cleaned once — after the bird proofing goes on.

No. High-pressure water can crack tempered glass, force water past seals, and strip anti-reflective coatings — and it usually voids the panel manufacturer's warranty. Deionised water and a soft brush is the correct method.

$15 per panel including GST with a $120 minimum. A 10-panel system is $150; a 20-panel system is $300. Commercial and large systems are quoted custom — see commercial cleaning.
